MASHASHA RELEASES NEW SINGLE "MUSUKI"

In the song, Mashasha confronts traditional gender roles – “Musuki” literally means someone who does the dishes but, in the Shona language it’s traditionally used to describe the role of a wife.
Mashasha explains: “Often a mother would actually be waiting for her son to get married, so she can make his wife do her housework. In this song, the man is saying he is ready to do the dishes, the cooking and all the cleaning – whether he gets married or not, he is making it clear that that the role of his wife will not be to do housework.”
Mashasha’s eponymous debut album is undoubtedly one of the most critically acclaimed Zimbabwean albums of the last decade. The first release on our label, it has been described by Songlines magazine as “A refreshing and sparkling debut, as good as Oliver Mtukudzi at his best.” Rainlore’s World of Music wrote: “The production really is as outstanding as the music and the performances. Mashasha is definitely the “world music” musician to look out for”, while “The Australian” newspaper described Mashasha’s debut as “One of those musical surprises that comes out of the blue and instantly places him in the league of many already established peers.” It also won the ZIMAA (Zimbabwe Music and Arts Award) for Best Album.
Over the coming year Mashasha will be preparing his second album, and is planning a tour with his new band.
